The establishment of Autism Hub for Educational Resources and Training or acronym A-HEART, an Autism Centre, in 2014 represents our commitment to develop the autism community in the state of Perlis. It is the aim of A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre to serve the autism community in the Northern States of Peninsula Malaysia. The main focus of A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre will be on education since it is the social responsibility initiative of University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).

However, A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre realised that in order for the people with autism to have a balanced development, it is closely linked to the community life that they are in. Thus, public awareness on autism and their needs is important to provide for a healthy social eco-system that helps in the development of autism community. Various programmes organised by A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre focus on the efforts to create public awareness on autism prevalence and the importance of early intervention with proper treatment. A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre believes that by creating awareness at different layers and levels of the public will contribute positively to the provision of a dynamic eco-system to this group.

It is always the commitment of A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre to implement bigger role to develop the A-HEART Autism Centre by offering one-stop service to the people with autism. The A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre building will be established at a strategic location in the State of Perlis for easy access of its services by the different levels of the community. A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre wishes to ensure that the socio-economic background of the people with autism will not be a constraint of their development and contribution to the development of the society as a whole.

A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre is committed to offering services such as early detection and intervention through treatment, therapy and the best educational approach to autistic children. Beyond these roles, A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre will provide education and skills training for young people with autism based on their unique abilities and interests. This means that the approach adopted by the A-HEART UniMAP Autism Centre will help those with autism to build their own lives in the future.

A-HEART Autism Centre needs your support to realise the ambitions and hopes of this noble cause. Give your heart to A-HEART!

Autism Doesn’t Define Your Success

Autism is often related to some taboo where the person is being demoted, teased, or disliked in the community. This situation always happens, even if we grow up in such a biased world, these people with autism should not feel the harshness of reality because they have feelings too, and they are same with us. As a matter of fact, some famous people have also suffered from autism spectrum disorder, but they were able to make the best out of their condition and pursued great and fulfilling careers.

  • Autism is a complex developmental disability.
  • It is a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain.
  • Autism shows no racial, ethnic or social boundaries and cuts across family income, lifestyle and educational levels.
  • According to Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in United States, it is estimated that Autism and its associated behaviours occur as many as 1 in 68 newborns.
  • Autism is one of the fastest growing disorders.
  • Public awareness of autism has increased and more and more children are being identified as having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at an earlier age.
  • Increased awareness has helped autistic children have access to equal education similar to a normal child
  • Awareness also means early diagnosis, treatments and positive behavioural support which is crucial for children on the Autism Spectrum.
  • Increased awareness translates into increased acceptance.
  • Approximate 9,000 children in Malaysia are born with autism every year.
  • Autism intervention programmes will be in need.
  • This will be a challenge for education services authorities to meet the needs of this growing group of Malaysians with autism.
  • All the NGOs combined today do not handle more than 1,500 children.
